Difference between BV E420 and BV E500 steel plate

Feb 04, 2026 Palik žinutę

BV E420 and BV E500 are high-strength structural steel plates classified by Bureau Veritas (BV), designed for critical marine and offshore applications. The letter "E" denotes a requirement for an Elevated yield strength, meaning these grades guarantee a higher minimum yield-to-tensile (Y/T) strength ratio (typically >= 0.85 or 0.89). This property is crucial for components where plastic deformation must be minimized under extreme loads, such as in offshore topside modules, heavy-lift vessel decks, and Arctic vessel hulls.

The primary distinction lies in their strength level. BV E420 offers a minimum yield strength of 420 MPa, while BV E500 provides a higher strength of 500 MPa. This allows E500 to support greater loads or enable more weight-efficient designs through the use of thinner plate sections compared to E420.

To achieve the elevated Y/T ratio and higher strength, E500 requires more stringent control of chemical composition and a precise manufacturing process, typically involving thermo-mechanical controlled processing (TMCP) or quenching and tempering (Q&T). As a result, E500 generally has a higher carbon equivalent (Ceq), making its fabrication-particularly welding-more demanding. Welding E500 requires stricter procedures regarding preheating, controlled low heat input, and often post-weld heat treatment to manage the risk of hydrogen-induced cracking and preserve the mechanical properties in the weld zone. While both grades require careful fabrication, E420 is generally more forgiving. The choice between them involves a trade-off: E500 offers superior strength and weight savings, whereas E420 provides a balance of high performance with potentially lower fabrication complexity and cost.
